Hometown Hero

(My cousin John w/ his dad, my uncle.)
(John with his mom & dad.)

This post is about my cousin John. He is an Army Ranger, and was stationed in Afghanistan. We just heard he was critically wounded in a major battle that took place on the Pakistan/Afghanistan border in the mountains. The war really hits home when someone you love is wounded. There are so many men and women fighting for our freedom. We sit around and sip lattes debating the war and it's causes or purposes, but the bottom line is there are soldiers protecting our hard-won freedom and preventing the war from entering our home turf. I so hope these soldiers are greeted with the wave of respect, honor, and love that they deserve when they return home.

This is the recount of his battle and where he is as far as recovery. Please pray for his recovery both physically and mentally, his family, and his wife (the other Sarah Faulkenberry). And pray for the families that lost their son/fathers in that battle.
Just Added: Here is a news story that ran on the news last night. Click on the following link, go to the news section in the center of the page and click on “Midland Soldier Killed & Another injured”. I Can’t wait to see him and hug his neck.

"As you know, on Friday John and his squadron were ambushed by Taliban fighters in Afghanistan. They were hit with an RPG (rocket propelled grenade). John was one of nine soldiers injured; one was killed in action, and there is one missing in action. Of the nine injured soldiers, John was one of three that were flown immediately to Germany. Shrapnel tore through his right thigh, breaking the bone in two places, tearing a lot of the thigh muscle out and severing the sciatic nerve. He is supposed to be flown to Walter Reed Medical Center in Washington DC on Tuesday.

The good news is that they don’t expect him to lose his leg; however, they do expect it to be a long recovery process. Because of the sciatic nerve being severed, there will be some permanent damage and he will need to “reprogram” his brain on how to walk again.

I just got off the phone with Richard and Sara is with John now. They said every time he comes to, he’s still fighting the battle and telling them that he has lost his leg.
Here is what he remembers of the attack.
A platoon got ambushed and then a second platoon went out to join the fight. Then John was in what is called a “Quick Reactionary Force” and went out and they were engaged in the battle.
John recalls that the “killed in action” solider (a Captain) and the “missing in action” solider were both dead. John was putting the Captain in a Humvee when the RPG hit.
He remembers looking down and seeing his foot in a “wrong” position and he thought that his leg was blown off. (That’s why he keeps thinking his leg is gone when he wakes up.)

Today, they put plates and screws in the bottom portion of his leg but in the thigh bone they are going to have to put a rod in the bone to tie the two pieces together. They won’t do that until they get him to Walter Reed. There is good blood flow and good color in his foot, so that is a good sign.

I’ll be in Washington, DC on August 5th-8th and hopefully I will be able to get in to see him.

Keep John and Sara, and Richard and Teresa in your prayers. (They will be flying up to Washington DC on Wednesday, or when they know for sure that John is there.)

Love, Dad "

My family, on both sides, is now littered with decorated war heroes. My grandpa was a Colonel in the Air force. He was a Fighter Pilot and Bomber Pilot in WWII, Korea, & Vietnam. My Paw Paw was a US Army Airborne Ranger in WWII. And my brother Tommy earned an MSM award for the craziness that he took care of after Hurricane Katrina hit. I am proud of these men and grateful for their contribution to my safety and freedom. A luxury I do not take for granted.

I'll be teaching a sewing workshop today and that will be a nice distraction. :0)

I invented post-its...

No I did not invent post-its, but I did go to my 10-yr high school reunion this weekend. And other than Genine Gerafalo not being there it was much better than Romey & Michelle's high school reunion. Everyone grew up very nicely. I reconnected with lots of old friends. It was fantastic. I mean... there is not enough money in the whole Western Hemisphere to make me re-do middle school or high school again, but the reconnect was refreshing. Everyone is still beautiful and living large.

Speaking of beautiful and living large check out my friend Cindy's Ranch. If we gave out awards Cindy's would be: "The One Who Gives the Most Back to Society" http://www.cornerstone-ranch.com/

She and her husband run a non-profit ranch to serve adults with mental disabilities through complete residential care, providing an active group home community that enables their residents to experience abundant life. How's that for a mission statement and a life purpose??

For any of my long lost buddies who are now reading my blog. Hello and I love you! Here's a few pics of my family and my brother! Tommy and Mary have three boys, and David and I have two girls.

Here's Tommy's fam!

And here are my girls.

Baby Quilts

These are ready to head out. These are my first two "completed" baby quilts. The pictures turned out yucky, but now the quilts are all packaged up and I can't retake the photos. They were made from the Moda American Jane collection. http://www.hancocks-paducah.com/ItemList--American-Jane-Fabrics--m-23_36_592.html

These quilts are farm-friendly. They make you want to rise early, put on your apron and gather chicken eggs or milk Daisy the milk cow. They are so cute. I can't wait to send them to the new babies coming into our life, expected to arrive this summer.

This apron is for a newly-wed friend, Rachel. Want to read a cute book? Check out her novel.

We'll call this apron "Domestic Bliss". This is what I give all my newly-wed friends. The "Domestic Bliss" gift basket. It usually includes one item off their registry in the kitchen section, a housekeeping magazine or book, and an original Jed's apron. Every now and then I get really lucky and score a vintage housekeeping book. Those are to be treasured. Oh they are fabulous. You know the kind that say things like, "Make sure you have the children in bed, your make-up fresh, and dinner hot for your husband when he gets home." Like the 6 o'clock hour isn't hard enough without all that extra pressure! I've even read one that said, "You have friends coming over for dinner and you feel a bit frazzled should you take a Valium or have a drink? The answer was a Valium because no one would smell it on your breath." Can you believe that craziness?? Anyhow, I think they make for fine wedding shower gifts. :) Very tongue-n-cheek, let's all be delusional, gift baskets.

Thank You, Stacy

My sister gave me a gift card to JoAnn's for my birthday and I finally spent it. Oh I love fabric, patterns, and books. Here's my loot:

I can scratch #2 off the list. :)

Duct Tape

Who knew duct tape came in so many wonderful colors? Oh my campers were busy! Here are a few more projects from craft camp, and a quote for you to ponder:

Cute Commissions

These are ready to head out. Cutie Patooties! Does your little one need one?

We've Been Crafty

Today at craft camp we made these fun polymer clay pens. The "crafty-kids" were impressed and it's a fun introduction to clay.

My "crafty-kids" have been crafty, and my own kids have been crafty too. Lots of fun--fill the summer-time--projects. My girls finally got to make the crayon cookies I previously mentioned, and tried their hand @ some clay creations. From left to right an the claytastic presentation is an owl, a fish, an ' I can't remember', and at the bottom a spiky caterpillar.

Breaking News: Jed's Sewing Camp got a little press in the local Kingwood Observer. Super fun. No pic, unfortunately. I sent them some cute pics, but they didn't run. Oh, well maybe next time. I'm pumped they ran the article.
This just in: I heard the Humble Observer ran a big article with the pictures. I'm trying to get my hands on one of them.

Katie's Duvet

My friend Katie and I went fabric shopping at High Fashion Fabrics one day, and I helped her pick out some fabric to make a duvet cover. She finished it, with the help of her mom, and look how adorable it is. I love it! Our assignment was to match the blue walls. So we found this awesome Amy Butler fabric, and what looks like white is really a white with sweet blue polka dots. FYI it is much easier to match the paint to the fabric, rather than the other way around. But OBVIOUSLY we ROCKED it! It's gorgeous, Kate.

Just Surfin' The Web

The girls are gone for the afternoon, and I have made a lasagna, and cleaned the pantry floor (I MEAN CLEANED...ie SCRUBBED, MOPPED, THROWN AWAY, ETC) and I'm totally indulging in some web surfing. I want many things. First and foremost I am grateful that I truly do NOT want for anything. What a blessing. I am grateful and a good steward, but if I were indulgent and could get what I wanted when I wanted (I would be spoiled) I would get...

  1. Bending the rules by Amy Karol

  2. Simple Sewing by Lotta Jansdotter

  3. Quilts by Denyse Schmidt

  4. Denyse Schmidt fabric

  5. Heather Bailey fabric

These have been on my wish list for some time, and I'm sure I will get them all eventually. In the mean time I've been listening to pod casts lately. I really love craftsanity right now. It's all these really great interviews with fun people in the DIY industry. Of course I particularly like the one with Amy Karol, Denyse Schmidt, and Claudine Hellmuth. Some of my favorite artist!

Here are some others recommended by the Adorn blog.

I've also been looking for places to buy Denyse Schmidt fabric. I can't find it around here, but I have found it on this website http://www.ciaspalette.com/categories/new.html

Other than that I've been busy with craft camp this week. We are having lots of fun making duct tape wallets, shadow boxes, polymer clay beads/projects, and macrame projects! Cute group of kiddos!

The above photo is of my nephew hangin' 10, at least getting his practice on!

Domestic Diva

These just out. Some charming wedding shower invitations for my friend Vanessa. It combined aprons and vintage images, two of my favorite things.

And speaking of aprons...the Pocket Gallery is up at Tie One On . I played around with some scraps and was planning on turning them into pockets for an apron that I would submit, but I never got around to it. A project for another day, I guess. Amy Karol of Tie One On/Angry Chicken also has a new book out that I'm dying to get my hands on. If I'm not mistaken her book came out the same week she had her 3rd daughter. WOW! I'm always inspired by those successful, crafty moms.
